The adidas Stan Smith was born in 1965 under another name: the adidas Robert Haillet, after the French tennis player who wore it. When Haillet retired, the brand signed American player Stan Smith, and from 1973 to 1978 the tongue carried his face with the Haillet name above it. In 1978 the Haillet name was dropped and the model officially became the Stan Smith.
How to recognise an adidas Stan Smith
Unlike almost every other adidas shoe, it has no three stripes on the outside. Instead there are three rows of perforations on each side, which also help ventilation. The heel tab, usually green, carries the Trefoil and the model name. It is a simple trainer, with a white leather upper, laces and a rubber sole, and that simplicity is why it was already in Guinness World Records by 1988, with around 22 million pairs sold.
Classic Stan Smith or Stan Smith 80s
Online we have the adidas Stan Smith White Green, the original version, plus the Stan Smith 80s in White Green and Maroon Off White. The 80s goes back to the proportions of that decade, with softer leather, a leather insole and an off-white sole with an aged finish that gives it a vintage look. If you want clean white, go for the classic; if you like the off-white tone, the 80s Maroon Off White looks great with dark jeans or pleated trousers.
If you are after other models from the same era, have a look at our classic and retro trainers or the adidas Superstar. We ship across Europe and have stores in Madrid, Barcelona and Paris.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Stan Smith and the Stan Smith 80s?
The silhouette is the same. The 80s brings back 1980s proportions and changes the finishes: softer leather, a leather insole and an off-white sole with an aged look. The classic is cleaner and whiter; the 80s is warmer.
How do I know my adidas Stan Smith are genuine?
Everything we sell at Newcop is genuine, Stan Smith included. Check the details of the model: three rows of perforations instead of stripes, the Trefoil and name on the heel tab, and the reference code on the inside label, which on the classic White Green is M20324.
Why does the Stan Smith not have the adidas three stripes?
Because it was designed as a smooth leather tennis shoe, and the stripes were replaced by three rows of holes on each side. They let air in and keep the brand signature without breaking the clean line of the upper.
How do I keep my Stan Smith white?
On smooth leather, a wipe with a textured side removes marks from the toe and the sole, and the smooth side works for a general clean. For a deep clean, use cleaning solution with lukewarm water and a brush, then let them air dry. You will find everything in Crep Protect.
