The sky blue of the stripes on navy is what sets it apart from other dark trainers: it adds a sporty, old-kit touch without losing its understated feel.

It works just as well in a terrace look as in a smarter one. For the first, a nylon tracksuit, a knitted polo and a beige Harrington jacket. For the second, dark jeans without rips, a white Oxford shirt and a cream cable-knit jumper. Navy does not compete with the blue of denim, so you can wear it with jeans in any wash.

The Spezial started out in 1979 as an indoor handball shoe, and you can tell from its flat sole and low profile, very comfortable for walking around town.
