Adidas BW Army Lux Core Black Gum

Black from top to bottom, with the gum sole as the only contrast: the Adidas BW Army Lux Core Black Gum is the most understated version of adidas' military sneaker. Black leather covers the whole upper and the inside too, because this Lux version has a leather lining instead of textile.

The original BW Army was made in the '70s and '80s for West German army recruits. That's where its low, simple, no-frills shape comes from, and today it works with everyday clothes as well as dressier pieces.

The all-black look makes it an alternative to a dress shoe. Try it with charcoal suit trousers and a turtleneck, with straight black jeans and a leather jacket, or with olive cargo pants that nod to its military roots. White socks give it a sporty feel; black socks lengthen the leg.

Wipe the leather with a damp cloth and condition it now and then with a neutral cream. Clean the gum sole with water and mild soap.
